Before you buy — what to inspect
Forma Scientific was acquired by Thermo—same excellent cabinets under either name. Parts are universally available, and any certification tech can service them. The 1284 and older models are still serviceable but filters are getting harder to source. Stick to 1300 series when possible.
Checklist: Motor hours, filter condition, sash operation, airflow alarm test
Baker invented the modern BSC and their quality is legendary. The SterilGARD e3 is their current model; SterilGARD III Advance units are 10-15 years old but extremely robust. These are often the choice for pharmaceutical and industrial applications. Used units from pharma closures are often pristine.
Checklist: Verify it's a true Class II (not a clean bench), check window counterbalance, inspect UV assembly
NuAire is a solid #3 choice after Thermo and Baker. Plymouth, MN-based company with good US support. LabGard ES series has excellent ergonomics. Their older NU-425 models are still in service but prioritize NU-540 series or newer.
Checklist: Blower condition, airflow sensor calibration, check for any modifications
Less common on the used market but very good when found. American-made with excellent build quality. The older Purifier series (non-Logic) are workhorses. Delta series is their high-end line with excellent ergonomics.
Checklist: Digital display function, airflow calibration, filter housing seals
Budget new alternatives
New labs on a budget, teaching institutions, labs with lower utilization
US labs preferring domestic equipment, energy-conscious facilities
A Class II biosafety cabinet creates a sterile work environment while protecting the operator from exposure to infectious agents. Air is drawn through a front opening, passes down through a HEPA-filtered laminar flow zone over the work surface, then splits—some recirculates through a supply HEPA filter back into the cabinet, while the rest exhausts through an exhaust HEPA filter. Type A2 cabinets recirculate about 70% of air and can exhaust into the room or be canopy-connected; they're the most common and cost-effective. Type B2 cabinets are 100% exhausted and hard-ducted, required when working with volatile toxic chemicals or radionuclides. These cabinets are essential for mammalian cell culture, bacterial work, viral handling, and any procedure requiring both sterility and containment. Most academic and biotech labs use 4-foot or 6-foot Type A2 units. Annual certification by a qualified technician (NSF/ANSI 49 standard) is legally required, costing $300-600 per certification.
The 1300 Series is the most widely deployed BSC in North America. Parts are universally available, every certification technician knows them, and they're built like tanks. The SmartFlow design with automatic airflow compensation extends filter life. 6-foot models (1375) are most common; 4-foot (1345) fit smaller spaces. Resale value holds well, and you'll never have trouble finding service.
What you lose: New budget cabinets from secondary manufacturers have thinner service networks, potentially longer lead times for parts, and unknown long-term reliability. Used equipment requires upfront certification costs, potential filter replacement, and risk of undisclosed issues. Ergonomics on older or budget units are often worse—arm fatigue matters during 8-hour cell culture sessions.
What you keep: Core containment and sterility performance—a certified used Thermo or Baker protects you exactly as well as a new one. HEPA filtration efficiency doesn't degrade until filters are loaded (and certification catches this). Build quality on premium used equipment exceeds new budget equipment. You keep the ability to certify annually, pass inspections, and do the same work as labs with new equipment.
For GMP/GLP environments, require full service documentation, certification history, and ideally IQ/OQ documentation from previous installation. Some auditors require cabinets purchased new or fully refurbished with documentation from the manufacturer or certified refurbisher. Thermo Fisher, Baker, and NuAire all offer certified refurbished programs that satisfy most regulatory requirements. Factor in $1000-2000 for proper documentation packages if buying from secondary market for regulated use.
