Analytical Balance

An analytical balance uses a high-precision electromagnetic force restoration (EMFR) mechanism to measure mass to 0.1mg. The draft shield (enclosure) protects against air currents that would affect readings at this precision. Capacity is typically 80–320g with 0.1mg readability. Used for: weighing reagents for standard solution preparation, measuring out compounds for synthesis, pharmaceutical weighing, calibration standard preparation, and any application where gravimetric accuracy is critical.

What to look for

• Readability vs precision: readability (0.1mg, 0.01mg) is the smallest increment displayed. Repeatability (standard deviation of repeated weighings) is more important — should be ≤ 0.2mg for a 0.1mg balance.
• Capacity: 120g is sufficient for most applications; 220g or 320g for larger samples. Higher capacity at the same readability costs more.
• Leveling: the balance must be perfectly level. Check the built-in bubble level. All analytical balances have manual or automatic leveling feet.
• Calibration: does it have internal (automatic) calibration or external calibration only? Internal calibration using a built-in reference mass is more convenient. FACT (Mettler) and Cal-by-Motor (Sartorius) are brand names for this.
• Draft shield design: clamshell opening (sides open) vs. sliding doors vs. hinged side panels. For tall containers or irregular samples, check you can actually fit them in the shield.
• Response time: how quickly the display stabilizes. Modern analytical balances typically stabilize in 3–6 seconds.
• Interface: RS-232, USB, Ethernet for connecting to a PC or printer. Most modern balances have at least one.

Tips for buying used

• Before buying, test with known calibration weights (Class E2 or F1). Put a 100g weight on the pan and verify the reading is within ±0.5mg. If it drifts by more, the internal mechanism or calibration is off.
• Check the draft shield panels are intact. Even a hairline crack or small chip lets in air drafts, affecting precision. Replacement panels are brand-specific and can cost $50–150.
• Test at zero with nothing on the pan — does it settle to 0.0000g within a few seconds? Slow settling or drift suggests internal contamination or a worn mechanism.
• Inspect the weighing pan for corrosion, staining, or bent corners. Stainless steel pans can be replaced ($30–80) but bent/warped pans affect accuracy.
• Ask about the calibration history. A balance used in a pharmaceutical or QC lab will have regular calibration records — this is a good sign.
• For Mettler Toledo models, the 8-digit serial number encodes the manufacture date. Use this to assess age.
• Confirm the power supply is included or that you can source a compatible one — not all PSUs are standard.

Budget trade-offs

What you lose: Less stable and repeatable readings at high precision, slower response time, less reliable internal calibration, shorter mechanical service life, no formal calibration documentation pathway.

What you keep: A budget analytical balance can correctly weigh 0.1000g of a compound. For most routine lab weighing where the goal is 'close enough', budget instruments work. The issue arises in regulated environments or when weighing to ±0.1mg genuinely matters for your result.
